Sir William Hillary had the idea for this Douglas landmark after he was washed overboard during a rescue on a steam packet vessel in Douglas bay, when he realised it was to far to swim to the shore. The tower was completed in 1832 at a cost of £254 with Hillary paying nearly half the amount, whereafter it was always kept well stocked with fresh water and bread for shipwrecked sailors awaiting rescue.
